Manitou Springs is grappling with a projected $4.3 million budget shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year. This financial challenge arises primarily from a significant decline in marijuana sales tax revenue, a key funding source for the city.
The situation was further complicated by the recent failure of ballot measure 2A. This measure sought to grant the City Council authority to increase the city’s excise tax up to 14%. Approximately 56% of voters rejected the proposal, leaving city officials to explore alternative solutions to balance the budget while maintaining essential services.
Residents have expressed concerns over the city’s financial planning. Long-time homeowner Don Wallace remarked, “If we know we’re gonna retire, we’ll have less money, so we plan for it. And it didn’t look like the city planned for it.”
City leaders are now considering various strategies to address the shortfall, including potential service cuts, new fees, or tax adjustments. Community involvement is encouraged as officials navigate these challenging financial decisions.
